Sabrina Brando is the director of AnimalConcepts and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Stirling in Scotland on the topic of “24/7 across lifespan: zoo animal and human wellbeing”.

Science reveals many interesting facts and details, but what do we do with this knowledge? When do we actually speak of 'science', and what is it to 'know' something? This presentation presents a winding journey around the world through the many ways of knowing, and about the difference by putting science into practice, for individuals, and for the greater good.
Today we deal with many different aspects in environmental science, research, animal care and welfare, human health care and wellbeing, which are all symptoms of systems which are not functioning optimally. This presentation will focus on the importance of identifying symptoms to make long term changes through the change of systems, without loosing out of sight the importance of action in the here and now, while working on longterm plans and solutions.
During the conference I had not 1 but 4 colleagues tell me “you worked at a zoo and aquarium? I did not know that!” You know when you are taken by surprise and think: What do you mean? I have spent the last almost 30 years working in, with and at the service of animals and people in a wide variety of facilities around the world!
Sabrina Brando traveled to South Africa last month to work with the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) at uShaka Marine World, where she and care staff came together to discuss animal welfare assessments and care, emphasising the importance of evidence-based decision making according to the latest, internationally recognised findings and practices. Sabrina also traveled to Chimp Eden, a chimpanzee sanctuary just outside Nelspruit in South Africa, working pro bon for the PASA Primate Care Program.
